“Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.” – Charles Mingus
We are so silly sometimes… we have made complexity more impressive, more respected than simplicity. Our lives are filled with stuff, our days constantly rushed from one activity to the next, our minds trying to figure out how to do more, be more, have more. We are so driven we have lost our ability to listen and just flow with life. ENOUGH already, jeez! We’re wearing ourselves out!
Here’s the best analogy I can come up with… we’ve all heard that life is a river and you must learn to go with the flow. Most of us don’t trust the flow, so we think if we push it, it will go faster or in the direction we think it should go in. Or we try to swim up stream, which of course as we’ve learned from the salmon, ends up killing us and we eventually surrender one way or another (yikes!).
“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”– Hans Hoffman
There is a natural flow in our lives leading toward our evolution that can only guide us through our intuition and our surrender. This does not mean that our lives become passive… the mighty Amazon is certainly not a passive force on this planet. It means that we allow moments of emptiness, of silence in order to be able to catch this flow and allow that which is necessary/essential to speak.
We have another kind of flow going on in our lives that we have set into motion through our unconscious habits and behaviors. It is this flow that is slightly off its rocker thinking we can push the river, or swim upstream. Because this is the flow most of us are caught up in, it requires great effort and attention to transition to the place of surrender.
“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox, what is soft is strong.” Lao Tzu
The path to surrender is to simplify. Is there one thing you can let go of today that you tell yourself is essential, but if you were to let it go nothing would fall apart or die? Find that one thing (without thinking too hard and complicating your day further), let it go and in the absence of that one thing… BREATHE!!!!
